"Digital Natives" vs "Digital Migrants"?
_In a famous article published in 2001, Mark Prensky was opposing what he saw as "Digital Natives" -those "fluent"
in the "language of technology", mostly younger people- to "Digital
Migrants" -those who learned the "language of technology" as adult and
who therefore "speak" it an "accent", mostly older generations-.
Nowadays however, online tools have become increasingly simple to learn
and simple to use, helping bridge this gap between "natives" and
"migrants".
Actually, teachers will often found that teenagers might be very familiar with simple acts as sending emails, downloading music or using Facebook, but are far less proficient when it comes to using more elaborate tools, most of which are commonly used in the professional world all around us: these are tools such as Google Docs, Diigo, Weebly, Prezi, and many more. This site lists some of those tools, most of which are completely free.
Keep in mind that as soon as a tools becomes popular, another startups immediately tries to make it yet simpler and better: the tools presented here are the one found in 2011 but no doubt that many will be replaced by yet more powerful and creative ones very quickly, and that is a good thing!
